In the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries, the most efficient way to transport logs was via our rivers. There was very little if any railroad track, so most sawmills would strategically locate themselves on or very near a river. That way, logs could be floated down river to their sawmill. The logs with the densest heart would often sink to the bottom of the river where they laid perfectly preserved for hundreds of years.

The historic value and recovery process only add to the wood’s rare beauty. The river wood in this beautiful home came from the bottom of the Cape Fear River near Wilmington, NC.
